- Story Text: - INTRO: A Chechen village came under heavy artillery shelling and air attacks by Russian forces on Tuesday.
-------------------------------------------------------- The Chechen village of Goiskoye, just south of the capital Grozny, on Tuesday (April 16) came under heavy artillery shelling and aircraft attacks by Russian forces.
Under a peace plan proposed by President Boris Yeltsin, Russian troops will withdraw from areas which do not harbour Chechen rebels and sign peace agreements with local Russian commanders.
But Yeltsin's plan has been undermined by air raids against peaceful Chechen villages and heavy casualties among Russian troops.
Black and white smoke was rising from the village as the Russian attack took place. Frightened people fled Goiskoye in panic to the neighbouring villages. Women cried and said they had lost their homes and all their possessions and wanted the troops to leave immediately.
The first Russian units left Chechnya on Monday from so-called peaceful areas leaving behind the main contingent to eliminate dozens of remaining pockets of resistance.
Yeltsin has said progress towards peace in Chechnya is crucial for his chances in a June 16 election where he faces a strong challenge from Communist Party leader Gennady Zyuganov.
