  • Story Text: Russian forces attacked rebel positions in the foothills of Chechnya on Sunday (May 28) and Itar-Tass news agency quoted witnesses as saying thousands of people were fleeing their homes.

    Russian tanks and heavy artillery fired at Chechen sniper positions near the village of Chishki, 30 km (20 miles) south of the southeastern Chechnyan town of Shali.

    The Russian positions are at the bottom of a heavily-wooded valley and the thick forest provides good cover for Chechen snipers.

    Russian forces have been bombing and shelling mountains in southern Chechnya to push fighters out of bases set up after they were driven out of most of the lowlands.
