  • Story Text: - INTRO: Russian troops have renewed attacks on the Chechen capital Grozny as a three-day old truce looks increasingly shaky, forcing residents to flee the city.

    ------------------------------------------------------------------- Mortar attacks have been launched by Russian federal forces on the streets of Grozny controlled by Chechen separatists - after the breakdown of a ceasefire agreement on "technical terms".

    People began to flee the capital as reports suggested the Russian military command may be prepared to use force to rescue its troops surrounded by rebels.

    Several hundred people gathered in the village of Alkhan-Yurt, south west of Grozny, protesting against killings of civilians.

    Russian helicopters were flying over the village as the demonstrators shouted 'Allah Akbar'.

    Some residents were left searching for members of their family who disappeared during the fighting.

    The Russians deny any massacre of civilians but the residents of the villages near Grozny say they constantly find the dead bodies in civilian clothes in the area.
