- Story Text: Lebanon's pro-Iranian Hizbollah said on Friday (August 8) it would resume Katyusha rocket attacks on northern Israel because a 1996 ceasefire understanding had failed to protect Lebanese civilians.
"We say the understanding has ceased to protect civilians. We say the resumption of using other means to protect civilians has become necessary," Hizbollah secretary-general Sheikh Hassan Nasrallah told a news conference.
"But the timing of using Katyushas to protect civilians has to do with the situation on the ground...and a number of other similar considerations," he said.
Katyusha rockets fired by guerrillas in Lebanon slammed into a northern Israeli town early on Friday, slightly injuring a woman and damaging a synagogue, the Israeli military said.
Nasrallah said Hizbollah was not responsible for the attack.
Also in Beirut, Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik al-Hariri also warned against an escalation in violence. Speaking at a joint press conference with Egyptian Prime Minister Ganzouri, Hariri said: "We do not want to see an escalation." "This is wrong. This is very bad for peace as well as security." He said there will be a meeting on Sunday in which the issue will be addressed.
