- Story Text: Fighting has resumed after a lull of only 36 hours is the areas about 3 miles(kms) north of Phnom Penh, capital of the Khmer Republic (formerly known as Cambodia). Nine days of heavy fighting ended on June 6, but broke out again even more fiercely on Tuesday (June 8) as North Vietnamese forces and Viet Cong troops attempted to drive Khmer forces from the area before the monsoons start in about 2 weeks.
If the Khmer forces can be driven out, the enemy will be able to control the areas guarding their vital bases and supply routes to the east. The Khmer High Command reported that 80 of their me were wither killed or wounded near the town of Viheer Sour(pronounced vi-hee-ah soo-or) north east of Phnom Penh. On the night of June 8-9, the Mekong River village of Preach Prasap (pronounced pree-as prah-sop) came under heavy attack and about 50 homes were destroyed by rocket and mortar fire.
A large Viet Cong - North Vietnamese force is located only about 1 mile (km) from Preah Prasap, and more heavy clashes are certain before the monsoon starts.
