- Story Text: INTRO: Serbs mounted an organised attack on SFOR troops at Udrigovo, near Bijeljina, NATO said on Monday.
-------------------------------------------------------------------- Serb civilians on Monday (September 1) threw stones at United States (U.S.) soldiers deployed near a television relay station in northeast Bosnia, but there were no injuries reported.
Some 170 people surrounded the soldiers with the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO)-led Stabilization Force (SFOR) who did not retaliate when they were attacked at around midday.
The United Nations had asked local police to intervene. The SFOR troops deployed last week near the Udrigovo relay station in a bid to prevent clashes between partisans of the rival Serb leaders fighting for control of the airwaves in a bid to consolidate their power. The bitter feuding has pitted Bosnian Serb President Biljana Plavsic against her former ally Radovan Karadzic, who is wanted on war crimes charges.
Control of television broadcasts has become central to their fight with both sides now controlling separate and competing channels. The Udrigovo transmitter is located in the northeast of the Bosnian Serb Republic where rioting last week threatened to draw the NATO peacekeepers into the power struggle within the Serb leadership.
