- Story Text: Deteriorating security has led to a spate of killings and attacks in Zairean refugee camps as the United Nations warned on Monday (August 15) that a further 30,000 people were at risk from a killer-strain of dysentery.
Rwandan refugees built a blockade across the main supply route at the Kibumba refugee camp in Goma after two Rwandans were wounded in an argument with Zairean soldiers.
Four refugees were killed in two days in the Goma area, United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) spokesman Panos Moumtzis said.
On Monday, Moumtzis also said that lack of sanitation could lead to dysentery in epic proportions and could cost the lives of tens of thousands of people.
The International Committee of the Red Cross said that at least 60,000 latrines were needed, but only 2,000 were currently in place. People were building makeshift latrines near where they slept and ate which made sanitation difficult.
