- Story Text: A truce between Russia and Chechen rebels came under stress on Monday (July 17) while Russian and Chechen delegates took a three-day break from peace talks in the regional capital Grozny.
Eyewitnesses said an eight-year-old girl was killed and five villagers injured in a Russian attack on the village of Germenchuk, about 15 km (10 miles) southeast of the city.
The child died while eating lunch with her family. A neighbour said the family were lucky they were not all killed.
"At the beginning helicopters shot, then tanks and a wave of explosions threw us into the yard," said Nina Senturina. Another villager said the Russian soldiers constantly got drunk and starting "firing at each other or whoever else".
The wounded from Germenchuk were taken to hospital in Shali.
Russian district commander Valery Sedorchenko said he did not know how the incident had happened but said helicopters and armoured vehicles had been sent to the area after a Russian supply convoy was ambushed near the village earlier in the day. Three Russian soldiers had been injured in the ambush, he said.
