- Story Text: Suicide car bombers attacked two police stations in
Iraq killing at least 15.
Suicide car bombers attacked two police stations
north of Baghdad on Saturday (November 22), killing at
least 15 people, while Baghdad airport officials said a
missile hit a civilian plane which landed safely.
The bombings were the latest strikes on Iraq's
U.S.-backed police force, but the missile attack was the
first reported hit on a fixed-wing plane. The officials
said there were no casualties on the plane owned by global
cargo company DHL.
In the suicide bombings, one car sped towards a police
station in the town of Khan Bani Saad, detonating as Iraqi
police opened fire on it, U.S. soldiers at the scene said.
Captain Ryan McCormack said six police and three civilians
were killed, along with the bomber.
"Basically what happened today was at 7.30 this
morning, on vehicle borne improvised explosive device
detonated at the police station at Khan Bani Saad. What
happened was the vehicle tried to enter through the
compound, the police reacted, fired upon the vehicle at
which point the vehicle detonated," McCormack told Reuters.
Witnesses said severed limbs were scattered in the
debris after the blast. U.S. soldiers and tanks sealed off
the area.
Another suicide bomber targeted the main police
headquarters in the nearby town of Baquba, 65 km (40 miles)
north of Baghdad. Police said at least six people were
killed and 16 wounded.
The injured from both blasts were taken to a hospital
in Baquba. The hospital was filled with seriously wounded
Iraqis, and blood was pooled on the floor. Trucks brought
in several mutilated bodies.
"A civilian landcruiser drove up, driven by a civilian,
and the security guards tried to stop him but he ignored
their signals and the car reached the front door of the
headquarters and a suicide bombing occurred," Police
Officer Sami Hussein said.
A huge crater was blown into the road outside the
police headquarters.
Suicide attackers have struck several times at Iraqi
police. On October 27, coordinated car bomb attacks on
three Baghdad police stations and the International
Committee of the Red Cross killed at least 35 people.
Earlier that month, two suicide bombers killed eight Iraqis
at another Baghdad police station.
At Baghdad international airport, the officials said
initial reports were of a missile strike on the civilian
plane, but a DHL official did not confirm this.
The company official said the plane had taken off from
Baghdad airport and returned to make an emergency landing
after an engine fire which was being investigated.
A U.S. military spokesman confirmed that a civilian
plane had "declared an in-flight emergency". He said more
details would be released later.
Officials at the airport said initial indications
suggested a missile had hit the plane.
Missiles have been fired several times at planes
approaching the airport, but Saturday's incident was the
first time a fixed-wing aircraft had been hit.
Guerrilla attacks have brought down five U.S. army
helicopters in Iraq over the past month, killing 39 people.
A Brussels-based spokesman for DHL, Xavier Debuck, said
an Airbus A300 had been on its way to the Gulf Arab state
of Bahrain when it was forced to turn back to Baghdad and
make an emergency landing.
He said the company's clients in Iraq included
non-governmental organisations. It did not handle military
cargo.
