- Story Text: Five U.S. soldiers have been injured in an attack on a U.S.
army vehicle in Mosul and a U.S. convoy has
allegedly come under attack from anti-U.S. guerrillas in
the city of Fallujah.
Five U.S. soldiers were injured on Friday (October
17) when their vehicle came under attack near Mosul in
northern Iraq, coalition sources confirmed to Reuters.
Reuters television filmed smoke rising in the distance
from the scene of the attack as U.S. army vehicles raced
ahead of them. The army closed off the road leading to the
scene.
The vehicle, situated on a scrubby hillside dotted with
low buildings, belched flames and thick clouds of black
smoke as locals watched.
U.S. troops came under a volley of stones thrown by a
crowd of about 100 Iraqi youths on the western edges of
Mosul when soldiers were apparently cordoning off the area
after the attack.
Unconfirmed reports said troops fired into the air to
disperse the crowd as military helicopters circled
overhead.
A U.S. army convoy came under attack by anti-U.S
guerrillas in the city of Fallujah, 60 km west of Baghdad,
eyewitnesses said.
There was no immediate confirmation from the U.S
military in Iraq.
In a separate incident, a U.S. soldier was seriously
wounded near Fallujah.
Earlier, a U.S soldier died in a blast in Baghdad,
hours after three troops were killed in the central Iraqi
city of Kerbala, taking to 101 the U.S. combat losses since
Washington declared an end to major hostilities five months
ago.
