- Story Text: Hizbollah guerrillas have attacked Israeli troops
occupying the foothills of the Golan Heights and Israel
responded by firing artillery and rockets into south Lebanon.
In Jerusalem on Sunday (April 7, 2002) an Israeli security
source said residents of Israeli border communities were
ordered into bomb shelters after Hizbollah gunmen fired small
arms and possibly heavier weapons at Israeli army guard posts
near the Lebanese border.
Two soldiers were wounded, they said. Hizbollah officials
in Beirut declined to comment.
The incidents fanned fears in Israel that the
Syrian-backed group is trying to open a second front with
Israel, which has launched an offensive on Palestinian cities
it has branded as "breeding grounds for terrorism" after a
wave of suicide bombings.
Palestinians say the military campaign, in which
Palestinian President Yasser Arafat has been surrounded in his
West Bank headquarters, is designed to permanently occupy
their cities and topple his Palestinian Authority.
Hizbollah has attacked Israeli positions in Shebaa Farms,
a strip of land on the foothills of the Golan, almost daily
since Israel begin its West Bank assault. A volley of rockets
has also been fired at Israeli targets from Lebanon in recent
days.
A Reuters correspondent said Hizbollah fighters shot
mortar rounds and anti-tank missiles at Israeli posts in
Shebaa Farms on Sunday (April 7). Fire was seen coming from at
least one Israeli position.
Israeli artillery shelled the edges of Lebanese border
villages, while Israeli jets fired rockets at Abou Kamha,
around 10 km (six miles) northwest of Shebaa Farms. A
75-year-old Lebanese man was wounded by flying glass when an
Israeli shell smashed into his house in the border town of
Kfar Shouba.
Witnesses said Hizbollah fighters fired surface-to-air
missiles at the jets, but had hit none of them. In a statement
the group said it had attacked in response to Israeli shelling
of Lebanese territory.
