- Story Text: Several Jewish settlers in the divided city attacked
Palestinian shopowners on Tuesday (October 8) on news of the
shooting.
An Israeli security source and medics said at first that
one Israeli had died in the attack on Tuesday, but later
reported the person had been critically wounded.
Of the other casualties, one was seriously wounded and two
others were moderately hurt, medics said.
Israeli police said the shooting took place at a junction
south of Hebron, apparently from a passing car, on a road
built for Jewish settlers which bypasses Palestinian villages.
A small enclave of some of the most radical Jewish
settlers lives in the predominantly Palestinian-populated city
under heavy guard by Israeli soldiers.
Palestinian militant groups have vowed to avenge an
Israeli raid in the Gaza Strip on Monday which killed 14
Palestinians and wounded some 80 others.
Palestinians called the Gaza operation a massacre, saying
the dead were civilians, while Israel maintains most were
militants.
Earlier Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon called
Monday's army raid in Gaza a successful operation against
militants, but expressed regret that some civilians were
harmed.
Sharon said there would be "more operations in the Gaza
Strip", despite international condemnation the raid on the
southern Gaza city of Khan Younis at a time when the United
States is seeking Arab support for a possible war on Iraq.
"I think that the operation was a success," Sharon told
reporters at meeting with President Moshe Katzav. "We have to
take into consideration that the Israeli forces are making
every effort to contain raids and attacks by terrorist
organisations."
The Palestinians, who are waging an uprising against
Israeli occupation, said the dead and most of the wounded were
civilians and called it a massacre. Israel disputes this and
says many of the dead were armed militants.
"Most of the casualties there were terrorists and are
terrorists, but still there were some civilians. Therefore I
express my sorrow for that," Sharon said.
In the West Bank on Tuesday, Palestinian president Yasser
Arafat also met with his cabinet in his battered headquarters.
