- Story Text: Attackers fired a rocket early on Wednesday (March
24) that struck the Sheraton Hotel, where foreign
contractors and journalists stay.
At least one loud explosion was heard in central
Baghdad and a cloud of smoke rose near the Sheraton hotel
on Wednesday (March 23).
Attackers fired a rocket that struck the Sheraton
Hotel, where foreign contractors and journalists stay.
Security guards said there were no reports of casualties.
The rocket hit a sixth-floor ledge and the explosion
left the lobby strewn with glass, said security guard Rabah
Nasser.
U.S. soldiers protect the Sheraton, which is ringed by a
concrete blast wall to ward off bombing attempts. A U.S.
military spokesman said he had no information on the blast.
The U.S. military said it had no immediate information.
Guerrillas have in the past targeted Baghdad hotels used
by foreign contractors, business people and journalists.
U.S.-led occupying forces blame Saddam Hussein
supporters and foreign Islamic militants for attacks in the
country since the former Iraqi president was toppled last
April.
On Tuesday, guerrillas shot dead 11 Iraqi police and
police trainees in two separate daylight attacks, the
latest deadly strikes against Iraqis working with the
U.S.-led occupation.
