A U.S. military convoy was attacked by a
rocket-propelled grenade on Tuesday (December 23) in Mosul,
the U.S. military said. A foreign private security guard
was wounded.
This comes after a bomb was found on Monday (December
22) in the home of Abdul Aziz al-Hakim, a Shi'ite leader
and current head of the U.S.-backed Iraqi Governing
Council, but was defused, his son said.
U.S. soldiers arrested Muslim militants with links to
the most wanted Iraqi official still on the run, but rebels
signalled defiance with the assassination of a senior Iraqi
judge.
U.S. troops hope the seizing of the Muslim militants
will generate intelligence leading to Izzat Ibrahim
al-Douri, one of toppled Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein's top
aides.
The detentions over the past 24 hours were significant
because they point to a tangible link between Saddam
loyalists and Muslim militants.
U.S. officials have wavered between blaming Saddam
loyalists, Muslim militants, or both for attacks on
American soldiers and bombings of Western targets.
Efforts to break the insurgents are set against U.S.
plans to hand power to Iraqis by mid-2004 but to keep
troops in Iraq until guerrilla activity has been wiped out.
Boosting Iraq's battered economy is key to improving
security.
