- Story Text: A U.S. soldier has died in Iraq after being wounded in
an attack on a checkpoint near Balad, a town north
of Baghdad.
The American soldier died on Monday (June 2, 2003)
evening from wounds received in the attack with small arms and
rocket-propelled grenades near Balad, 90 km (55 miles) from
Baghdad, the U.S. Central Command said on its Web site.
The report did not name the soldier or give the date of
the attack, which was carried out by unknown assailants.
Amer Mohammad, a local resident in Balad said he wanted
U.S. troops to leave the area.
"We are Arabs. The Americans used to make checkpoints
close to our houses. We are armed and we do not accept the
Americans to come close to our farms and houses, let them go
to another place. We never allow them to come here," he said.
American troops came under attack in a separate incident
late on Monday in Ramadi, 100 km west of Baghdad. The soldiers
there had begun demolishing a building suspected to be used as
a base for attacks against U.S. troops.
In retaliation U.S. troops launched an attack, causing
damage to a petrol station. The owner of the business said
missiles hit north and south of the al-Dleem petrol station.
There have been several clashes between American troops
and local Iraqis in Ramadi as well as Falluja, 60 km west of
Baghdad.
U.S. forces vowed on Thursday (May 29) to destroy
supporters of deposed Iraqi president Saddam Hussein, whom
they have blamed for a series of attacks against them.
