- Story Text: Iraqi insurgents attack a senior Interior Ministry
official killing bodyguard and wounding 4. In Samarra, 20
feared dead in car bomb.
A senior Interior Ministry official escaped an
assassination attempt on his convoy in Baghdad on Tuesday
(April 12) but his bodyguard was killed almost instantly.
Police said Major General Tareq al- Baldawi, the
Interior Minister's Secretary, was driving through the
al-Adil neighbourhood when gunmen opened fire on his
convoy. His son was amongst the four who were wounded. Two
others were bystanders.
Shooting broke out after the attack when Iraqi forces
arrived at the scene.
Several ministers and officials in Iraq's caretaker
government have been the target of attacks by insurgents
bent on toppling the U.S.-backed government.
In Samarra, north of Baghdad, a car bomb targeting a
U.S. convoy killed 3 Iraqis and wounded at least 20,
according to hospital sources.
A doctor at Samarra's main hospital said his facility
received five children and a woman amongst the dead and
wounded from the attack in the Al-Dubat neighbourhood.
The violence comes amid reports that clashes further
west, in Qaim, near the Syrian border, claimed the lives of
22 people on Tuesday (April 12) in two days of clashes and
following two suicide attacks on a U.S. base there.
An American contractor was also said to have been
kidnapped in the Baghdad area on Monday night. The report
was confirmed by the U.S. embassy in Baghdad.
