- Story Text: One U.S. soldier killed and at three wounded in bomb attack
close to main U.S. military base in Tikrit, Iraq.
A U.S. soldier was killed and three other soldiers
were wounded on Wednesday (October 1) by a bomb blast near
the entrance to the main U.S. military base in Saddam
Hussein's hometown of Tikrit, the U.S. military said.
The remote controlled bomb was detonated as a convoy of
several vehicles headed towards the base, the headquarters
of the U.S. Army's 27,000-strong 4th Infantry Division
lo
cated in one of Saddam's country palaces on the edge of
Tikrit.
U.S. forces in the Tikrit area have come under frequent
attack from guerrillas, believed by U.S. commanders to be
mainly Saddam loyalists and foreign Islamic militants.
The U.S.-led military task force in Iraq says more than
700 soldiers have been wounded in attacks since May 1, when
major combat was declared over in the war that ousted
Saddam.
