- Story Text: Iraqi violence flares in Falluja folowing the
captutre of Saddam Hussein.
A train carrying supplies to U.S. forces in Iraq was
set on fire outside the flashpoint town of Fallujah, 50
kilometers (30 miles) west of Baghdad on Tuesday (December
16).
Witnesses said the train was attacked by
rocket-prope
lled grenades. One wagon of the train caught
fire. There was no
evidence of casualties.
Following the blast a group of looters raided the
carriages as a U.S. helicopter flew over the scene of the
explosion.
Falluja is a stronghold of supporters of ousted
president Saddam Hussein.
Witnesses said hundreds of residents protesting at the
arrest of Saddam rioted in Falluja on Monday night
(December 16),
overrunning the office of the U.S.-appointed mayor.
The demonstrators stormed the building, broke up
furniture, computers and air conditioning and then
destroyed documents.
They later set fire to the contents outside the
building and hung up two large pictures of Saddam Hussein
and Iraqi flags from the rooftop.
The attacks came in the heartland of Saddam support
north and west of Baghdad, home to the Sunni minority that
has long dominated Iraq. Most Iraqis, however, celebrated
the demise of the man who ruled them with an iron fist for
three decades.
