- Story Text: Saboteurs have attacked a gas pipeline feeding into
the Baiji plant overnight, an Iraqi energy offical has said.
A bomb blew up a pipeline carrying oil from Iraq's
Kirkuk fields to the country's biggest refinery on
Wednesday (June 9) and is likely to disrupt supplies for
several days, an oil ministry spokesman said.
The spokesman said the pipeline attacked by saboteurs
was not connected to Iraq's vital oil export line to
Turkey, which is already out of action following previous
attacks.
He said Wednesday's fire was under control and said the
flow from the oil fields to the refinery was likely to
resume in about four to five days.
Seperately, a fire at a power plant near the Baiji
refinery, 180 km (112 miles) north of Baghdad, forced the
plant to be shut down, reducing Iraq's power output by
about 400 megawatt, or about 10 percent of the country's
total 4,000 MW capacity, officials said.
Saboteurs have repeatedly attacked Iraq's oil and gas
infrastructure over the past year in an effort to undermine
attempts to reconstruct the country's energy sector.
Iraq has struggled to meet its target of pre-war export
levels of two million barrels per day as its oil facilities
have
been hit by technical glitches as well security problems.
