- Story Text: Pakistani Shi'ites protest U.S. attacks on holy
shrines in Iraq.
Hundreds of activists of I.S.O (Imamia Students
Organisation), a Shi'ite student faction , took to the
streets of Pakistan's northern Lahore city on Sunday (May
30, 2004) to protest against U.S. attacks on Shi'ite sacred
places in Iraq.
Holding banners and placards, chanting anti-U.S.
slogans, the men, women and children marched through
various streets of Lahore.
The demonstrators condemned the U.S. occupation of Iraq
and demanded the immediate evacuation of U.S. and
coalition forces from Iraq.
Protestors said U.S attacks on the sacred places in Iraq
were creating restlessness among Muslims and rousing
detestation against America.
Student leaders said this was the beginning of a call
for rebellion against American troops' "atrocities on
innocent Iraqis", especially prisoners and women.
They vowed to continue the protests until all the allied
forces left Iraq and allowed the Iraqi people to run their
own country.
Later, the angry crowd spread out U.S Britain and
Israeli flags and set them afire. They also put an effigy
of U.S. President George Bush on fire.
As the flags burned, the demonstrators continued to
shout slogans in protest.
