- Story Text: Palestinian militants have attacked a car in which
Jewish settlers were travelling on the road that connects
the West Bank to Jerusalem
Palestinian militants wounded an Israeli mother and
her three children in a shooting at their car near a Jewish
settlement in the West Bank on Sunday, the Israeli army and
rescue workers said.
"There was a incident of shooting at a family. The
mother of the family , a 39-year-old woman, is in serious
condition. Her daughter was hit with multiple gun shot
wounds as well, in moderate condition. Both are at Hadassa
hospital," said Dr Glick who treated the wounded at the
scene.
The attack on a road connecting the settlement of Har
Gilo to Jerusalem was a rare flare-up of violence since
Palestinian militants waging a 34-month-old uprising
against Israeli occupation declared a three-month truce on
June 29.
Ra'anan Gissin, advisor to Israeli Prime Minister Ariel
Sharon, has already reacted to the attack.
"Regretably, tonight's terrorist attack is another grim
reminder, and a bloody one, that there is really no
substitute - to quote President Bush - for 'sustained,
targeted and effective operations against those involved in
terrorism. The ..... cannot serve as a substitute. Any kind
of agreement with a terrorist organisation cannot really
serve as a replacement to this sustained effort to
dismantle the terrorist infrastructure and terrorist
organisation."
But the Palestinian authority's information minister,
Yasser Abed Rabbo said that these incidents occur because
Israel doesn't want to withdraw from Palestinian
territories.
"Well, such incidents might occur but they should not be
used as an excuse to postpone the Israeli withdrawal from
various Palestinian areas and cities in the West Bank. In
fact, these incidents might occur in the future because
Israel is not intending to withdraw. When we take our
responsibilities in the security field as we did in Gaza,
we will be able better than the Israelis to control the
conditions in the West Bank but now I cannot say that we
are responsible for anything that had ocurred or anything
that might occur in the future as long as Israel is not
implementing the road map and its commitments and
obligations in accordance with this roadmap."
The attack was claimed by the al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades,
an armed group linked to Palestinian President Yasser
Arafat's Fatah faction.
Residents said Palestinian police in vehicles began
patrols in the nearby city of Bethlehem in search of the
assailant.
