- Story Text: Three U.S. soldiers wounded in a roadside explosion
in the Iraqi town of Tikrit.
Three U.S. soldiers were wounded on Tuesday
(December 16), when a roadside bomb hit a military patrol
in Tikrit, hometown of captured Iraqi dictator Saddam
Hussein, U.S. officers said.
They said an improvised explosive device (IED)
detonated near the soldiers' vehicle while on patrol in the
town, 170 km (110 miles) north of Baghdad.
A Reuters reporter saw two soldiers being brought into
a U.S. military base. The injuries of the three were
described as not life-threatening. "My commander and
I expect more type of incidents like
this, IED's (improvised explosive devices) with the capture
of Saddam Hussein. The same as earlier with Uday and
Qusay," said U.S. Sergeant Major Cesar Castro.
Saddam was captured on Saturday (December 13) at an
underground hideout 15 km (nine miles) south of Tikrit.
Iraqi insurgents have killed 198 U.S. soldiers since
major combat was declared over on May 1.
