  • Story Text: West Germany's Young Socialists have attacked their country's commercial ties with South Africa's apartheid regime. The criticisms were made on Friday (10 February), the opening day of their three-day congress at Hofheim, near Frankfurt.

    SYNOPSIS: The young Socialists were gathered here while the Socialist International congress was being held at the West German port city of Hamburg. They expressed solidarity with African liberation movements, such as these representatives from Zimbabwe (Rhodesia), who entertained with a selection of freedom songs.

    In his speech opening the congress, the Young Socialists' deputy chairman, Michael Pape, established the theme of attacking what he termed 'exploitive' governments. He singled out South Africa for strong criticism, a standard practice at young socialists' meetings anywhere in the world. Herr Pape also sounded the habitual government for allowing the country to maintain ties, especially commercial interchange, with south Africa, and other countries the Young Socialists do not approve of.

    Herr Pape pledged whatever support his organisation could offer to the black nationalists movements seeking self-determination throughout the African continent.
