Palestinian guerrillas fired rockets at an Israeli border post from south Lebanon on Sunday and Palestinian sources said four of their men were killed in clashes which ensued. The two Soviet-made Katyusha rockets Which struck Metulla overnight were the first to hit Israel in almost a year.
The two Syrian-backed Palestinian groups, the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP) and the Palestine Liberation Front (PLF) issued a statement saying two men from each of their groups were killed when they crossed the Lebanese border. The statement said the guerrillas, three Palestinians and a Syrian, were killed in Metulla.
Israeli military sources said the clashes occurred near the Lebanese town of Marjayoun in the Israeli-declared border security zone. They said two men were killed, two were captured and another two men escaped.
An eight-month-old baby at the Metulla settlement was also wounded by flying glass from the rocket attack.
The Palestinian groups said they made the attack to underline their rejection of Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Shamir's plan for elections in the Israeli-occupied territories.
