- Story Text: Hamas says two of its members killed in Saturday's bombing in the Lebanese capital.
A bomb exploded in Beirut on Saturday (December 26), killing two Hamas members, according to the spokesman for the Palestinian Islamist group in Lebanon.
''As the Islamic resistance movement of Hamas, we extend our condolences to the Palestinian families, to the martyr Bassel Ahmed Jomaa, 29-years-old, and the martyr Hassan Saeed al-Hadaad, 21-years-sold, who both passed away after an explosion took their life yesterday, on Saturday,'' said Ossam Hamdan, the spokesman for the Palestinian Islamist group in Lebanon during a news conference in Beirut on Sunday (December 27).
Hamdan blamed Israel for the killings.
''Our brother, the martyr, Bassel Jomaa was a leading member in our group [Hamas] and also our brother Hassan was major constituent. Here we announce their official death as martyrs for the cause of our movement and hope that God Willing their souls will be welcomed by him. Everyone knows that Hamas is a movement functioning around struggling against the [Israeli] occupation and that the occupation is very obviously targeting this movement and threatening it,'' he added.
Lebanese security sources described the target of the explosion as a car used by Hamas members but gave conflicting accounts of casualties in the blast, which rocked a stronghold of the Hezbollah militant group in the southern Beirut suburbs.
The funerals of the two men killed are expected to take place on Monday (December 28), a Hamas source said. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
