- Story Text: A car bomb targetting a U.S. military patrol killed a soldier and four civilians in western Baghdad on Wednesday (May 27), the army and police said.
At least 12 people were also wounded when the bomb exploded as a U.S. patrol was driving through a popular market in the Sunni Muslim neighbourhood of Abu Ghraib.
Violence in mostly Sunni western Iraq has fallen since it was the hub of a raging insurgency between 2005 and 2007, but militant cells still operate there in the vast desert region.
U.S. military officials say some insurgent groups in Iraq, mindful of the loss of public support al Qaeda suffered because of indiscriminate attacks on civilians, are trying to reinvent themselves as fighters who only kill foreign forces, not Iraqis, using more carefully targetted bombs and sniper attacks. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
