- Story Text: A car bomb, detonated in Bayaa, a district in southern Baghdad, kills 20 people and injures 80 others. Bystanders and emergency services use blankets and stretchers to carry victims away from the blast site. A car bomb killed 20 people and wounded 80 others near a crowded market in a Shi'ite neighbourhood of Baghdad on Sunday (May 6), Iraqi police said.
The attack took place in Bayaa, a district in southern Baghdad that has been targeted several times by car bombs blamed on Sunni Islamist al Qaeda.
"What did those innocent people do to be killed by a car bomb? Where is the government? Where is peace and security? We call on the Iraqi government to come and see the situation and to see the status of security," said a man from the area.
Bystanders used blankets to carry both dead bodies and those wounded onto the back of pick-up trucks. The bomb tore off the fronts of several shops and destroyed or damaged many cars.
U.S. and Iraqi forces launched a major security crackdown in Baghdad nearly three months ago. The offensive has reduced sectarian death squad killings, but car bombs still plague the city. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
