- Story Text: Three bombs wound 10 people in Thailand's Muslim-majority far south. Suspected Muslim separatist rebels detonated small bombs on Friday (June 22) in Thailand's predominantly Muslim south, wounding 10 people.
Police said a three kilogramme bomb was stashed in the awning of a spare auto parts shop in Yala, one of three southern most Thai provinces, where more than 2,300 people have been killed in a three-year insurgency.
The explosion injured five villagers and two soldiers, including one child, police said.
In a separate attack, militants also set off two small bombs at the side of the road in Narathiwat as soldiers drove past, injuring three of them, police added.
Despite the violence and growing calls for more drastic action against the militants, military-appointed Prime Minister Surayud Chulanont insists he remains committed to a peaceful resolution of the conflict.
The three provinces of Yala, Narathiwat and Pattani, where the majority of people are ethnic Malay, were a sultanate until annexed by overwhelmingly Buddhist Thailand a century ago. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
