- Story Text: Three civilians were killed and six wounded when a car bomb exploded near the house of an Iraqi tribal leader north of the capital, Baghdad, on Tuesday (September 5, 2006), witnesses and a hospital official said.
The blast was near the house of Sheikh Mumtaz, one of the tribal leaders of Samarra, 100 km (62 miles) north of Baghdad.
A witness said the explosion happened at about 7am local time.
Samarra is on the banks of the River Tigris and was held by insurgents until U.S. forces overran the city late in 2004.
A Shi'ite shrine there was bombed in February, which U.S. and Iraqi officials blamed on al Qaeda and which unleashed a wave of killings and reprisals between majority Shi'ites and Sunnis that has killed thousands and pushed the country to the verge of civil war.
Al Qaeda denied responsibility for that incident. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
