- Story Text: A car bomb exploded outside a Civil Guard barracks in the northern Spanish city of Burgos on Wednesday (July 29), injuring 46 people, some of them children, in an attack authorities blamed on the Basque rebel group ETA.
The blast at around 4 a.m. (0200 GMT) destroyed most of the outer wall of the multi-storey barracks in one of the biggest attacks for some time by ETA, whose ranks have been decimated by arrests.
Most of the injured, who are said to include children, suffered cuts and bruises, and 38 were transferred to hospital in the historic cathedral town. None was said to be in a serious condition.
The car, packed with explosives, had been left outside the barracks, which houses members of Spain's paramilitary police force and their families. There were said to be almost 120 people asleep in their apartments at the time, including 41 children.
ETA is held responsible for killing more than 800 people in the past 40 years in a campaign for an independent Basque homeland in northern Spain and southern France. It uses shootings and car bombs, with police and army barracks often the target.
The Spanish authorities say ETA is under pressure to show it can still mount attacks despite recent arrests that included the man suspected of being its top commander, Jurdan Martitegi, in April. His capture brought to four the number of ETA commanders caught in less than a year.
The most recent killing blamed on the group was on June 19, when a police inspector died in a booby-trapped car in the northern city of Bilbao.
