- Story Text: Three people were killed, including a senior police officer, and thirteen wounded on Tuesday (June 29) when a car bomb went off as a police patrol was passing in a town north of Baghdad.
Police said the explosion happened in the centre of Baiji, 180 km (112 miles) north of Baghdad.
They have since made 20 arrests in the area.
Municipality worker Shakir Hameed was sent to the scene to clear the debris.
He said the bomb exploded next to Lieutenant Colonel Hussein, the head of the intelligence department for Baiji police.
"We condemn this attack," he said.
Overall violence in Iraq has dropped sharply since the height of sectarian carnage of 2006-07, but bombings and killings continue on a daily basis.
Tensions have been heightened since an inconclusive general election in March, which produced no outright winner and as yet no new government.
In a separate incident on Tuesday, an Interior Ministry source said a brigadier general in the Iraqi army was killed by a roadside bomb in the Kadhamiya district of northern Baghdad. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
