- Story Text: The latest in a string of bombings across Iraq has cast doubt on the ability of the country's security forces to quell a stubborn insurgency.
A bomb hidden underneath a market stall near a crowded bus station in the Bayaa district of southern Baghdad killed at least two people and wounded 30 on Thursday (June 25), according to a hospital source.
The blast in the Shi'ite district came a day after at least 72 people died in a market bombing in Baghdad's Sadr City, also a Shi'ite area.
Eyewitness Abbas Fadhil, a vegetable seller at the market, said the bomb was hidden in a plastic bag and was left under vegetable stalls.
"We do not know how she (the woman who left the bomb) managed to enter because there is a checkpoint there and another one here. She asked sellers to allow her to leave her shopping bag under the stall so she could go shopping. After she left, the bomb went off," he said.
A string of recent attacks has cast doubt on the ability of Iraqi forces to keep the lid on a stubborn insurgency after U.S. combat troops withdraw from towns and cities by June 30.
On Saturday (June 20), a massive truck bomb killed 73 people near the northern city of Kirkuk. That and the Sadr City market bombing were the bloodiest attacks in the country for more than a year. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
