- Story Text: A parked car bomb exploded in eastern Baghdad's Palestine Street on Monday (June 6) and police said of the nine wounded by the blast, five were policemen.
The explosion left a crater on the road and damaged nearby homes.
One of the residents said the blast was so big one of the cars parked in the street was lifted up.
"I felt the car going up and then falling down and smoke filled the house. My wife was wounded with shrapnel in her back and the whole house was damaged," said Ahmed, an eye witness.
Monday's blast was one of seven attacks across Iraq including a rocket attack in which 5 US service members were killed in Baghdad and a suicide bomb in Tikrit that killed 13 Iraqis.
The Tikrit bomber blew up an explosives-filled sedan car at the entrance to a complex of palaces previously used by former president Saddam Hussein in the Sunni-dominated city, 150 km (95 miles) north of Baghdad.
Although overall levels of violence have fallen since the peak of Iraq's 2006-2007 sectarian conflict following the 2003 U.S.-led invasion that toppled Saddam, attacks on local police and military personnel have increased as the end-year deadline for the withdrawal of U.S. troops from the country approaches.
Security concerns are high on the agenda as Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki's fragile cross-sectarian coalition faces growing popular discontent over its performance. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
