A car bomb exploded in a busy commercial area in southern Baghdad on Friday (October 11), killing at least 12 people and wounding 22, police said.
Police said women and children were among the victims of the bomb, which struck the Abu Dsheer neighbourhood, a mainly Shi'ite district on the southern outskirts of the capital.
Seven vehicles were set ablaze, and about 15 shops were burnt and damaged, police said.
"The blast took place at a main street at the entrance to the market in Abu Dsheer district, burning a number of shops, wounding more than 10 people and killing about 15 others. It also damaged a large number of shops," said Hassan Haider, a man from the neighbourhood.
Violence in Iraq has fallen to four-year lows in recent months, but militants who no longer control many towns and villages still carry out frequent large-scale bomb attacks.
U.S. and Iraqi authorities have accused Sunni Islamist al Qaeda militants for car bombs and suicide bombs against civilian targets. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
