- Story Text: Eight soldiers were wounded on a main street in a Western district of Baghdad when a car bomb went off early Monday (September 20).
A police source said an Iraqi army patrol was driving past at the time in Saydiya district.
Meanwhile, residents of Baghdad's northern district of Kadhimiya inspected damage caused by one of three car bombings. The first targetted a national security office, the second minutes later was at an office of mobile phone operator Asiacell, part-owned by Qatar Telecommunications Co.
In all at least 18 people were killed.
Funerals were being held on Monday for some of those who died.
The blasts came three weeks after the U.S. military formally ended combat operations in Iraq, seven and a half years after the invasion that toppled Saddam Hussein.
Overall violence has declined sharply over the past three years but a stubborn Sunni Islamist insurgency, opposed to the Shi'ite Muslim-led authorities who came to power after Saddam's fall, continues to stage regular, devastating attacks. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
