- Story Text: A roadside bomb exploded in central Baghdad on Monday (December 17) morning killing two people and wounding six others, police sources said. They said that the bomb hit two passing minivans in Palestine Street.
"No one was driving in the street except for our two civilian vehicles. It (the bomb) targeted the civilians, there were no Americans and no policemen. There were only our two vehicles driving here," said Kadhim Jawad, driver of one of the minivans hit by the blast.
Violence in Iraq has reduced dramatically over the past several months, with the number of attacks countrywide falling by 60 percent since June when an additional 30,000 U.S. troops were fully deployed.
But Washington says al Qaeda remains a dangerous foe. An al Qaeda-linked group threatened to carry out bomb attacks earlier this month, and kidnappings and assassinations are also common. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
