- Story Text: A car-bomb explodes in Thailand's deep south province of Narathiwat, injuring 42.
A car-bomb exploded in restive Thailand south in Narathiwat on Tuesday (August 25), injuring 42 and at least four were seriously injured.
The bomb, planted in a cooking gas cylinder and left in the back of a stolen pickup truck, was detonated outside a restaurant packed with civil servants.
The attack took place in the main town in Narathiwat, one of three mainly Muslim-populated southernmost provinces plagued by five years of separatist unrest.
The bombing was the latest in a slew of attacks that have claimed 13 lives in the last week in the deep south, where rebels fighting the Thai state regularly target government officials.
The region was once a Malay Muslim sultanate until annexed by Buddhist Thailand a century ago, and separatist tension have simmered ever since. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
