- Story Text: A suicide bomber attacks a police compound killing six policemen and one civilian as clashes between hardline Islamist insurgents and pro-government forces continues.
A suicide car bomber killed six policemen and a civilian on Sunday (May 24) in Somalia's capital Mogadishu, where hardline Islamist insurgents are fighting pro-government forces.
A commander of a military force of Scuala police said the bomber drove a four-wheel to the gate of a police headquarters and detonated it in front of the guards.
"One of our soldiers opened fire on the suicide bomber. The car exploded and there were seven of our military forces that were killed including one civilian," Abdirahim Haji said.
Four died on the spot, two others died of serious injuries a police commander, who asked not to be named, told Reuters.
An upsurge in violence this month has killed nearly 200 people in Mogadishu and forced some 60,000 residents from their homes. At least 53 people have died since Friday (May 22) morning, when the government attacked rebel strongholds in the city.
Neighbouring states and Western governments fear Somalia, which has been mired in civil war for 18 years, could become a haven for militants linked to al Qaeda unless the new government under President Sheikh Sharif Ahmed can defeat them. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
