- Story Text: Five blasts caused by one suicide truck bomb and four car bombs killed 23 people and wounded 73 in the ethnically mixed city of Kirkuk on Sunday (September 17), police and hospital sources said.
One of the blasts struck outside the offices of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK), the political party of Iraq's President Jalal Talabani, police said, adding the explosion was caused by a truck bomb.
Another police source said two of the three blasts were caused by roadside bombs.
A Reuters cameraman on the scene of the PUK office attack filmed a charred body, scattered rubble and wreckage and crowds gathering as emergency workers rushed to the area.
Ethnically-mixed Kirkuk, 250 km (155 miles) north of Baghdad, is disputed by Sunni Arabs and ethnic Kurds, and settling its final status is regarded as one of post-war Iraq's most sensitive issues.
The city has seen considerable sectarian violence.
Later on Sunday (September 17), a roadside bomb killed two civilians and wounded eight others in a bird and animal market in central Baghdad , interior ministry sources said.
The attack took place in the al-Ghazel market of central Baghdad.
Witnesses at the site said that the blast was caused by a mortar.
"A mortar landed close to us in al-Ghazel market, wounding three civilians. Yes, it was a mortar," said Saddam, an eye witness.
Police forces sealed off the area immediately after the blast. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
