  • Story Text: A car bomb exploded in a Shi'ite neighbourhood in northern Baghdad on Monday (December 17), killing at least 11 people and wounding more than 44, police sources said.
    The attack is the deadliest in a wave of bombings and shootings across the country that killed at least 26 people, mostly in the northern Iraqi towns and villages, on a second consecutive day of violence.
    Police sources said that a car bomb exploded at a car dealership in Baghdad's northern district of Dolaei, a mainly Shi'ite-populated area.
    A resident at the scene said such attacks aimed to divide Muslims.

    "It (bomb) targeted civilian people who work to earn a living. This act cannot be accepted either by God nor by his prophet. Also Islam cannot accept such act. We are all Muslims, we believe in one prophet and our Qibla (the direction of the Kaaba in Mecca in which Muslims face in prayer) is one. There is no difference between Sunnis and Shi'ites. This is a sabotage work against the country and the humanity as a whole," said a resident of the neighbourhood.
    Violence in Iraq has eased since the carnage of 2006-2007, but Sunni Islamist insurgents still launch frequent attacks, seeking to reignite sectarian strife and undermine the Shi'ite-led government's efforts to provide security.
