- Story Text: Car bombs and attacks on cities across Iraq and in Baghdad killed at least 23 people and wounded more than 200 on Monday (April 15).
The attacks came ahead of provincial elections scheduled for Saturday (April 20).
In Baghdad's Kamaliya district, four people were killed and 17 wounded when a car bomb exploded, police said.
In Mussayab, a town north west of Baghdad, one person was killed and 16 wounded, police said.
The most deadly attack was in Tuz Khurmato, 170 km (105 miles) north of Baghdad, where five people were killed and 67 were wounded when four bombs exploded targetting police patrols, officials said.
The wave of attacks in Baghdad, Kirkuk, Nassiriya, Tuz Khurmato and other towns, came before a crucial ballot for members of provincial councils this Saturday (April 20).
Iraqis will vote on Saturday for members of provincial councils in a ballot that is seen as a test of political stability since the last U.S. troops withdrew in December 2011.
The ballot for nearly 450 provincial council seats will also be an important measure of Shi'ite Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki's political muscle against his Sunni and Shi'ite rivals before a parliamentary election in 2014.
A dozen candidates have already been killed so far in campaigning, including two moderate Sunni politicians over the weekend. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
