- Story Text: Eight Thai soldiers were killed when a bomb planted at the side of a road went off in southern Thailand on Saturday (June 29).
A military truck carrying the soldiers was travelling along a provincial route when it hit a 50kg bomb planted under the road.
Two soldiers and two civilians were wounded in the blast in Yala province which borders Malaysia, an area wracked by separatist violence.
The wounded were sent to a nearby hospital for treatment.
Thailand is currently seeking to hold talks with a major group, the Barisan Revolusi Nasional,(BRN) who last week offered to cease violence against Thai authorities in the border provinces on condition that the central government withdraws all armed forces from the area.
The proposal was rejected by the government.
Several thousands have been killed in eight years of violence. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
