- Story Text: Experts from the Cambodian Mine Action Center detonated a homemade bomb placed outside the National Assembly in central Phnom Penh on Friday (September 13).
The explosive device was put in a bucket and left overnight night just across the street from the National Assembly building. The newly elected parliament is not due to meet until September 23rd.
Police also found three M79 shells tied together with wire near Wat Phnom.
The opposition, the Cambodia National Rescue Party (CNRP), plans to hold a mass demonstration at nearby Freedom Park on Sunday September 15th, which is likely to overflow into the historic temple.
King Norodom Sihamony has invited the two elected party leaders for security talks at the Royal Palace on September 14.
Mu Sochua, CNRP's public affairs chief said the party planned to go ahead with the mass protest this weekend, despite the security threats.
The National Election Committee (NEC) announced election results on September 8, giving the ruling Cambodian People's Party (CPP) 68 seats and the opposition 55 out of 123 national assembly seats.
The CNRP has rejected the results, saying 1.3 million names were missing from electoral rolls and that Hun Sen's side had stuffed ballot boxes with illegal votes.
The United States and European Union have expressed concern about irregularities in the recent general election but say an investigation should be conducted by Cambodian authorities.
A few countries, including China, have endorsed the ruling CPP as the election winner.
The Cambodian government has ordered the military and police to be on alert in case of a coup attempt. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
