- Story Text: Israel assault in Lebanon aimed at crippling Hizbollah guerrillas continued on Sunday (July 16).
In Nabatiya, cars and buildings were damaged as Israel's campaign in Lebanon, launched after Hizbollah captured two Israeli soldiers and killed two on Wednesday, entered day five.
Israel warned Lebanon's army on Sunday against shooting at its aircraft as it carries out an offensive it says is aimed at weakening the Hizbollah guerrilla group.
Israel's campaign in Lebanon, has drawn only a mild plea for restraint from the United States, which blames Hizbollah and its allies, Syria and Iran.
Bombs crashed into Beirut's Shi'ite Muslim southern suburbs in overnight raids which set fire to Hizbollah's al-Manar television complex and nearby buildings, witnesses said. The station's signal disappeared briefly before returning.
Lebanon said on Sunday Italy had relayed Israeli demands that Hizbollah guerrillas hand over two captured Israeli soldiers and pull back from the border area before agreeing to a ceasefire.
A statement after a cabinet meeting said Italian Prime Minister Roman Prodi had relayed the demands in a phone call to Lebanese Prime Minister Fouad Siniora.
The United States earlier blocked any move by the U.N. Security Council to demand a ceasefire, saying the focus for diplomacy should be on the summit in St Petersburg.
