- Story Text: A roadside bomb killed 13 people and wounded 28 others in a crowded Baghdad market on Thursday (June 8), police sources said.
The explosion occurred in the New Baghdad district in eastern Baghdad, they said.
The blast wrecked the market stalls, mingling scattered vegetables and fruits with blood and distraught and angry people at the marketplace accused the government of absence of security.
"There is no security and the police are unaware of anything. The blast took place in the market place as people were shopping for lunch and dinner. They are all poor people," said an angry man as he stood among wreckage of market stalls.
Another man said: "A blast happened, ok, but why did no one from the the Interior (ministry) came here and look the police centre is there. No police, no interior ministry members have come to see and I swear by God we evacuated all the victims and no one came, neither the police nor ambulance or the army. This means that there is no government."
Three policemen were wounded when a bomb struck their vehicle in eastern Baghdad on Thursday (June 8) police sources said.
They said that the bomb went off as a police patrol was driving in Baghdad's Palestine Street.
A civilian woman was also killed in the blast and one civilian was wounded.
"A bomb exploded in Palestine Street near the back gate of Al-Mustansiriya University targeting a police patrol. The blast caused damage to the vehicle and wounded three policemen. A civilian woman killed and one civilian was wounded," said traffic policeman captain Abu Jassim.
The blasts came shortly after announcement by Iraq's Prime Minister of the death of al Qaeda leader in Iraq Abu Musab al-Zarqawi in a joint U.S and Iraqi military raid north of the capital Baghdad. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
