A bomb blast injured three people in a central Johannesburg hotel on September 26, forcing police to seal off streets in the central business area. After the explosion in a toilet at the Devonshire Hotel, three men, two white and one black, were treated in a local hospital for minor injuries and later discharged. South Africa's main cities have been hit by a series of bombings since last June, when President P.W. Botha imposed nationwide state of emergency aimed at stamping out political violence. The government has continued to blame the explosions on guerrillas fighting for black political rights. Ambulances and fire engines rushed through the crowded Branfontein business district to reach the hotel. Later, an official spokesman said that bomb disposal experts were investigating the blast.
