At least 17 people were reported killed and about 50 wounded when a bomb exploded in a crowded street near Moslem west Beirut's Arab University on August 8. State-owned Beirut radio said the blast was caused by a booby-trapped car. Witnesses said a pall of smoke hung over the scene of the explosion, the second in west Beirut in ten days. Syrian and Lebanese troops reportedly fired automatic rifles in the air to clear the way for rescue workers rushing injured from the mainly Sunni Moslem area to local hospitals. The explosion blew a hole in one building and set dozens of cars alight. It follows the deployment of Syrian and Lebanese troops in west Beirut's southern suburbs on August 4 in a bid to curb militia anarchy. Some Moslem leaders have blamed the west Beirut attacks on hardline Christians. Christian politicians and militia leaders have said that Syria helped to rig bombs detonated in Christian east Beirut, despite strong denials from Damascus. The August 8 attack brought to more than 70 the number of people killed in a spate of explosions in Beirut in just under two weeks.
