- Story Text: A briefcase bomb exploded at a busy Israeli bus station
on Friday but caused no injuries because a suspicious
shopowner raised the alarm in time for police to clear the
area.
Police were checking whether the attack, in the
coastal town of Netanya, north of Tel Aviv, was planned by a
group of Arab militants they believe were behind a November 7
pipe bomb attack that wounded 14 people in Netanya.
Kiosk owner Avi Barashi said that someone had reported a
strange bag near his stall.
"I asked the workers and they said that they saw someone
put the bag there.I became suspicious and I called the ploice
and they prevented a major disaster", said Barashi.
Police said the bomb was placed in a dark-blue briefcase,
and was apparently planted by a man dressed as an
ultra-Orthodox Jew with a beard and skulllcap.Israel radio
said the weapon was a pipe bomb laden with a kilogram (2.2
pounds) of explosives mixed with nails.
Area police commander David Sadeh said his forces arrived
at the central bus station in time to evacuate the area before
the bomb blew up.There were no reports of major damage.
Several people were detained for questioning.
"An alert citizen called police.Based on the first
suspicion, the area was closed off completely, the case blew
up under (police) supervision," Sadeh said.
As in other parts of the world, Israeli forces are on
alert against possible militant attacks ahead of the new
millennium.Israeli police blamed the last Netanya attack on
Arabs opposed to Palestinian peace moves with Israel.
