- Story Text: A bomb exploded outside the Algerian Embassy in Rome on Monday (18 August), shattering windows and damaging a car parked nearby.
The bomb, placed on a ground floor window ledge was one of three discovered at Algerian Embassies in Europe on Monday. A pamphlet found in a 'phone box said the Rome bomb had been planted by a group called "L'Opposition Algerian -- S.O.A.". It was signed by a Colonel Boussif Ben Hanouman.
In London, police defused a bomb planted outside the Algerian Embassy. A spokesman for a group calling itself "Soldiers of the Algerian Opposition" claimed responsibility in a 'phone call to Reuters. He warned it would be the first of many such attacks.
The spokesman said it was the start of a campaign to bring down Algerian President Houari Boumedienne and draw attention to the plight of the Algerian people ... many of whom were dying of hunger, he said.
Later in the day, West German police defused a bomb outside the Algerian Embassy in Bonn.
