- Story Text: At least 43 people were injured, two of them seriously, when a bomb exploded in a busy roadside market close to New Delhi's police headquarters.
The explosion occurred at lunchtime (0840 GMT) on Friday (January 9) in an area that includes Income Tax and newspaper offices as well as the Delhi police headquarters.
Police said the explosion was triggered by a crude home-made bomb thought to have been planted under a push-cart.
"We were working inside and suddenly there was a huge blast.
The glass on top of me shattered. When we came out, there was smoke all around and people were lying around", said Sanjeev Mehra, an eye witness.
According to police, sharpnel recovered from the blast site indicated that the bomb's chemical composition was similar to that used in a series of blasts that rocked the capital last year.
No-one has claimed responsibility for the latest attack.
In December, four people were killed and more than 20 injured when a bomb exploded on a bus. On November 30, two people were killed and 58 injured when two bombs exploded within minutes of each other.
The Shahid Khalsa force of Sikh separatists from the northwestern state of Punjab launched a violent campaign in the 1980s to demand a separate Sikh state, Khalistan, which means Land of the Pure. They claimed responsibility for two attacks last year.
